Summer 2010 Wolf Teacher Newsletter
Hello Wolf Friends!
With the welcome return of Spring comes new life and the bouncing energy of wolf puppies exploring their world. For wold families in the Northern Rockies, this year was a season of devestation unparalleled in modern history. Hunters killed more than 500 wolves, nearly one-third of the wolves we all worked so hard to restore. In some places entire packs fell to trophy hunters.
Just as wolves appeared to be on the brink of biological recovery, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar carried out a Bush-era plan to take away endangered species protection in Idaho and Montana. Those states lost no time in declaring open season on wolves. In the profiteering frenzy that followed, the sporting goods corporation, Cabela Outdoor & Fishing set up wolf killing derbies, using the profits to pay lawyers to resist efforts of wolf supporters to regain endangered species protection.
Your comments to Secretary of the Interior Salazar, President Obama, Cabela Corporation, and the Tourist Boards of Idaho & Montana are needed NOW, before the trophy and fur season comes round in the fall. Your intent to withhold tourist & consumer business from Idaho, Montana & Cabela as long as they promote short-sighted greed, will have impact. Wolves are a vital part of environmental balance and necessary to our children's healthy wild heritage, a concept we expect our Secretary of Interior to understand. Packs that are sirupted by overkill can't hunt their natural prey as well, and are more apt to turn to the easier domestic livestock. This behavior modification then plays into the hands of wolf profiteers. If we do nothing, wolf families will be victimized again. Phone calls, e-mails, and letters MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Letters and phone calls are most effective.
